Voices of Resilience: Feminist Activism Without Fear
The event “Feminist Activism Without Fear: Strategies for Resilience & Resistance” brought together activists, advocates, and supporters on International Women’s Day in New York City. Organized by the Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism in partnership with the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRDIC), the gathering highlighted the challenges feminist movements face across Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Southwest Asia, and the United States.
During the event, participants learned about strategies for resilience and resistance that frontline activists had developed in response to increasing reprisals. Guests also took part in the “Letter to Sister” activity as part of WHRDIC’s annual #SpreadingTheEcho campaign, where they read stories of imprisoned women human rights defenders and wrote solidarity postcards calling for their freedom.
In her speech, Anna Nikoghosyan, the coordinator of WHRDIC, reflected on the importance of solidarity and collective care within feminist movements. She shared that one of the most joyful moments for the Coalition is learning that a defender featured in the “Spreading the Echo” campaign has been released from prison. “When we hear such news, our mailing list usually fills with messages of celebration and tears,” she said, emphasizing that these moments provide strength and motivation to continue the work despite the challenges of transnational advocacy.
Nikoghosyan also spoke about the restorative power of organising together, especially in contexts where collective activism is criminalised or dangerous. She noted that connecting across borders, sharing experiences, and strategising together creates a deep sense of purpose and solidarity for many activists. Reflecting on the Coalition’s internal relationships, she added that members often express gratitude for having a space where they feel less isolated and more connected to a wider community. “Simply knowing that others are listening, paying attention, and standing with them can be nurturing,” she said.
The gathering created a powerful space for dialogue, hope, and international solidarity. By the end of the evening, attendees connected deeply through shared conversations over dinner and drinks, strengthening their commitment to justice, equality, and human rights.
